This course is a 5 credit hour course designed to meet the requirements for the LPN’s expanded role in administration of IV fluids and venous blood withdrawal.  Students will learn to access peripheral venous sites, safely administer IV fluids and approved additives through peripheral and central venous access devices, flush peripheral and central venous access devices and withdraw venous blood for testing from peripheral veins and central lines.

This course will provide 48 hours of classroom instruction and 12 hours of instruction in the clinical setting on a 1:1/1:2 instructor/student ratio. The student will successfully monitor patients receiving IV fluids, start peripheral IVs, change central line dressings, perform flushes into peripheral and central venous access devices designed to maintain patency, administer premixed antibiotics, and demonstrate appropriate utilization of IV pumps.
