Practical Nursing

Practical Nursing

This program consists of nursing theory and related practical experience. The primary objectives of the program are to prepare the student with the beginning ability to recognize the role of the practical nurse on the health care team, and to function safely and effectively in this capacity. Emphasis is placed on critical thinking/problem solving and comprehension of the scientific principles that underlie basic nursing skills and on understanding biological, psychological, sociological, and cultural needs of the client and family unit.

Upon successful completion of the program, the student will be eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) for licensure as a Practical Nurse. Students may apply for a Nurse Aide Certificate upon successful completion of NUR 131 and the first quarter of NUR 105.Nurse Aide skills credits awarded will be held in escrow. These credits will be placed on individual transcripts only after students have successfully completed practical nursing courses equivalent to one quarter. Credits awarded will be treated as transfer credits on the student's transcript, and therefore will not affect the student's GPA.
