Middle College

Middle College is Up and Running!
Pickens Technical College piloted a brand new program this fall for students in Aurora Public Schools—it’s called Middle College.  Since career & tech ed students sometimes underestimate their academic abilities, Middle College targets Pickens Tech’s capable, hardworking students—and helps them get to college!

Getting into the
Middle College:

How Middle College works:Middle College students are enrolled in an approved Pickens program, comprising 3-4 hours of class time.  Then, students are enrolled in Pre-Collegiate Math and Pre-Collegiate English (for 3-hr. PTC program students); or just Pre-Collegiate Math (4-hr. Cosmo/Hair students).  Both classes are conducted at Pickens, after the students’ tech programs are finished.  When the Pickens and Pre-Collegiate classes are over, the Middle College students are bused back to their home high school to complete two additional classes.

Middle College requires a serious commitment.  This year’s MC students (and parents) attended one or more information sessions, completed an application, took the Community College Accuplacer assessment and submitted their scores, and requested teacher recommendations.  Applicants’ grades and attendance were reviewed, and each student participated in personal interviews.  Thirteen students were accepted for the pilot program.  They will participate in Middle College for the next two years, working toward an “Academic Triple Crown”—a high school diploma, a Pickens Technical College program certificate, and an Associate of Applied Science from Community College of Aurora.

Then MC goes to CCA:  This year’s lone Middle College senior will begin his college classes August 27that CCA.  A number of additional students will begin CCA classes second semester.  For this initial pilot year, however, they will take their first CCA class online.  This will allow the MC students to continue receiving direct access to academic support from the  Middle
College students should be taking CCA classes at CCA while a new incoming group once again begins their Pre-Collegiate classes.  If you know of an APS sophomore who would be a good candidate for the Middle College Program, please contact the Middle College Coordinator, Julie Haeflinger, at
